How to Install a New Toilet: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you’ve ever found yourself with a broken or outdated toilet, you know how important it is to get the job done right. When I needed to replace an old toilet in my bathroom a few years ago, I wasn’t sure if I could handle the task myself. After doing a bit of research and gathering the necessary tools, I realized that installing a new toilet wasn’t as difficult as I had imagined. In fact, it’s a project that many DIYers can tackle on their own with a bit of patience and attention to detail. In this article, I’m going to walk you through the process of installing a new toilet, step by step, so you can complete the project with confidence and save money on professional installation fees.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need
Before you dive into installing a new toilet, it’s essential to gather the right tools and materials. Here’s what you’ll need:
- New toilet (including the tank and bowl)
- Wax ring (or rubber seal)
- Toilet bolts and nuts
- Adjustable wrench
- Plunger (optional, in case of any leftover water)
- Rags or towels
- Caulking (optional, for sealing around the base)
- Level
- Bucket or container for any water left in the toilet
- Pipe wrench or channel lock pliers (if needed for water supply line removal)
- Toilet flange (if the existing flange is damaged)
Having all of these tools and materials ready will make the process smoother and ensure you don’t have to run to the store mid-project. Now, let’s get started!
Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply
The first step in installing a new toilet is turning off the water supply. You’ll find the shut-off valve near the base of the toilet, usually on the wall behind it. Turn the valve clockwise to stop the water flow. After that, flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl as much as possible. You may want to use a plunger to remove any remaining water from the bowl.
Step 2: Remove the Old Toilet
Once the water is turned off and the toilet is emptied, it’s time to remove the old toilet. Start by disconnecting the water supply line from the toilet tank. You’ll likely need an adjustable wrench for this, but be careful not to damage the connection. Once the water supply is disconnected, place towels or rags around the base of the toilet to catch any leftover water.
Next, remove the bolts securing the toilet to the floor. These bolts are usually covered by decorative caps, so gently pry them off before unscrewing the bolts with a wrench. If the bolts are rusted or stuck, you might need a pipe wrench to loosen them. Once the bolts are removed, carefully rock the toilet back and forth to break the seal between the toilet and the wax ring. You may need a second person to help you lift the toilet off the floor and set it aside.
Step 3: Prepare the Flange
Now that the old toilet is removed, take a look at the flange that holds the toilet in place. The flange is the circular fitting that sits on top of the drain pipe. If the flange is damaged, you’ll need to replace it before installing the new toilet. If it looks in good condition, clean any leftover wax residue from the old wax ring.
If you need to replace the flange, you can purchase a new one at your local hardware store. This is important to ensure that your new toilet will be securely fastened to the floor and won’t leak. Once the flange is ready, you can proceed with the installation of the new toilet.
Step 4: Install the New Wax Ring
With the flange in place, it’s time to install the new wax ring. The wax ring creates a watertight seal between the toilet and the flange, preventing leaks. Simply place the wax ring over the flange, ensuring it’s centered. Some people prefer to place the ring on the toilet’s base, but I find it easier to place it on the flange itself.
Step 5: Position the New Toilet
Now comes the tricky part—positioning the new toilet. Carefully lift the toilet and align the holes in the base with the bolts coming up from the flange. Lower the toilet gently onto the wax ring, ensuring that it sits securely over the flange. Once the toilet is in place, press down firmly to compress the wax ring and create a seal.
Step 6: Secure the Toilet
With the toilet in position, it’s time to secure it to the floor. Slide the washers and nuts onto the bolts and tighten them using a wrench. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can crack the porcelain. Tighten the bolts just enough to hold the toilet firmly in place. You want the toilet to be stable but not too tight.
Step 7: Connect the Water Supply
With the toilet secured, the next step is reconnecting the water supply line. Use your wrench to attach the water supply line to the toilet’s tank. Once connected, turn the water supply valve back on by turning it counterclockwise. It may take a minute for the tank to fill, so be patient.
Step 8: Check for Leaks
After the tank is full, flush the toilet and check for any leaks around the base or at the water supply connection. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections slightly or use a little more caulking around the base. If there are no leaks, you’re ready to move on.
Step 9: Caulking and Finishing Touches
For a finished look, you may want to apply some caulking around the base of the toilet where it meets the floor. This will not only improve the appearance but also prevent any water from seeping under the toilet. Be sure to leave a small gap at the back of the toilet to allow for ventilation.
Step 10: Test the Toilet
Once everything is in place, it’s time for the final test. Flush the toilet several times to ensure it’s working properly. Check the water level in the tank to make sure it’s filling correctly, and ensure that everything is functioning as expected. If all is well, you’ve successfully installed your new toilet!
When I completed my first toilet installation, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was once I followed these steps. With a little patience and the right tools, you can install a new toilet yourself and save money on professional installation. Whether you’re replacing an old toilet or upgrading to a new one, this project is a great way to improve your bathroom and gain a sense of accomplishment!
